South Dakota Permit Test FAQs

How many questions are on the real South Dakota permit test?
South Dakota DPS’s current public guidance does not state the exact number of questions. Our comprehensive mock test contains 25 questions.

What score do I need to pass?

You must score at least 80% on the South Dakota knowledge test. On our 25-question mock test, that means answering at least 20 questions correctly.

How much does the South Dakota knowledge test cost?
South Dakota charges a $28 application fee. The fee covers up to three testing opportunities within a six-month period. If you do not pass after those attempts, or reapply after six months, you must pay the application fee again.

Can I take the South Dakota permit test online?

No. Testing visits require an appointment at a South Dakota Driver Licensing location.

What should I bring to the South Dakota DMV office?
Bring a completed license application, acceptable proof of identity and lawful status, proof of your Social Security number and two documents showing your physical South Dakota address. Applicants under 18 also need parental consent.

What happens if I fail?
If you fail the South Dakota knowledge test, you may not retake it before the next working day. You receive up to three testing opportunities for each application fee paid within a six-month period.

Are these practice tests based on the South Dakota Driver License Manual?
Yes. These practice questions are designed to help you study subjects covered by the official South Dakota Driver License Manual, including rules of the road, traffic signs and safe-driving practices.

Number 2

Begin with shorter quizzes

Start with road signs, lane rules, and right-of-way. These build strong foundational knowledge.
