Texas Permit Test FAQs

How many questions are on the real Texas permit test?
The Texas Class C knowledge exam contains 30 multiple-choice questions covering traffic signs and signals, rules of the road, safe-driving principles, and alcohol and drug laws.

What score do I need to pass?

You must score at least 21 correct questions out of 30. This is equivalent to at least 70% correct.

How much does the Texas knowledge test cost?
A Texas learner license for an applicant under 18 costs $16. Applicants aged 18–84 obtaining a new Class C license pay $33.

Can I take the Texas permit test online?

No. Texas DPS does not currently offer a general at-home knowledge-test option directly through DPS. Some approved driver-education programs administer the Class C knowledge exam as part of the course; otherwise, you take the exam at a Texas driver license office.

What should I bring to the Texas DMV office?
Bring your completed application, proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, proof of Texas residency, proof of identity and your Social Security number. Teen applicants also need a Texas Driver Education Certificate and a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance form, high-school diploma or equivalent. A parent or guardian must provide the required authorization for applicants under 18.

What happens if I fail?
If you do not pass the required Texas knowledge or driving exams, your application remains active for up to 90 days. After 90 days or three failed exams, whichever comes first, you must submit a new application and pay the fee again.

Are these practice tests based on the Texas Driver Handbook?
Yes. These practice questions are designed to help you study topics covered by the official Texas Driver Handbook, including traffic laws, road signs, safe-driving practices, right-of-way rules and driver responsibilities.
