Ohio Permit Test FAQs

How many questions are on the real Ohio permit test?
The Ohio knowledge test contains 40 multiple-choice questions covering motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs.

What score do I need to pass?

You must answer at least 75% of the questions correctly. That means at least 30 correct answers out of 40.

How much does the Ohio knowledge test cost?
Ohio BMV does not currently list a separate standard knowledge-test fee. After passing the knowledge test and vision screening, the operator Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) costs $26.50.

Can I take the Ohio permit test online?

Yes. Ohio offers the official knowledge test online through BMV Online Services. It can also be taken in person at participating deputy registrar locations or driver exam stations. Applicants who test online complete their vision screening when purchasing the temporary permit.

What should I bring to the Ohio BMV office?
For an in-person knowledge test, bring acceptable documents proving your full legal name, date of birth and Social Security number, if assigned. When purchasing your TIPIC, you’ll also need proof of Ohio residency and citizenship or legal presence. Applicants under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult who can co-sign for the permit.

What happens if I fail?
If you fail the Ohio knowledge test, you must wait at least 24 hours before trying again. There is no limit on the number of in-person attempts, but online knowledge testing is limited to two attempts within a six-month period.

Are these practice tests based on the Ohio State Driver Handbook?
Yes. These practice questions are designed to help you study topics covered by the official Ohio Driver Manual including traffic laws, safe-driving practices, road signs and driver responsibilities.
