How many questions are on the real South Carolina permit test?
The South Carolina knowledge test contains 30 multiple-choice questions covering traffic signs, driving laws and safe-driving practices.

What score do I need to pass?

You must answer at least 24 of the 30 questions correctly to pass. That's 80%.

How much does the South Carolina knowledge test cost?
SCDMV charges $2 for each knowledge-test attempt. After you pass, the Beginner's Permit costs an additional $2.50, making the standard SCDMV total $4.50.

Can I take the South Carolina permit test online?

SCDMV does not currently offer a general at-home option for completing the official Class D knowledge test. You may take the knowledge test at an SCDMV branch or through an authorized One-Stop Driver Training and Testing provider. SCDMV does provide a free online practice exam.

What should I bring to the South Carolina DMV office?
Bring the required documents proving your identity, U.S. citizenship and date of birth, your Social Security number and your current South Carolina residential address. A REAL ID permit requires two proofs of your physical South Carolina address. Applicants under 18 must also have an authorized adult provide consent.

What happens if I fail?
If you fail the South Carolina knowledge test, ask the SCDMV branch or authorized tester when you may make another attempt. Each SCDMV knowledge-test attempt costs $2.
