Wisconsin Permit Test FAQs
How many questions are on the real Wisconsin permit test?
Wisconsin requires two written tests. The Class D knowledge test contains 50 questions, and there is a separate 15-question highway-signs test.
What score do I need to pass?
You must answer at least 40 of the 50 knowledge questions correctly and at least 12 of the 15 highway-sign questions correctly. Both tests require a score of 80%.
How much does the Wisconsin test cost?
The knowledge and highway-signs tests are free when taken at a Wisconsin DMV customer service center. Eligible applicants aged 15–17 can take the knowledge test online for $10 per attempt. A Class D instruction permit costs $35.
Can I take the Wisconsin permit test online?
Applicants aged 15–17 can take the Wisconsin Class D knowledge test online from home. A parent or guardian must monitor the test, and you need a laptop or desktop computer with internet access and a webcam. Tablets and smartphones cannot be used. Other applicants take the test in person at a DMV customer service center.
What should I bring to the Wisconsin DMV office?
First-time applicants need a completed Wisconsin Driver License Application (MV3001), proof of legal status, proof of name and date of birth, proof of identity, their Social Security number and any required residency documents. Applicants under 18 must also be enrolled in an approved driver-education program and have an adult sponsor.
What happens if I fail?
If you fail a Wisconsin knowledge test, you may retake it no sooner than the next day. You may take the same test up to five times within a one-year period. After five unsuccessful attempts, you need special permission from DMV staff before testing again.
Are these practice tests based on the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook?
Yes. These practice questions are designed to help you study topics covered by the official Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, including traffic laws, road signs, safe-driving practices, right-of-way rules and driver responsibilities.
What is in the practice permit test?
Our comprehensive Wisconsin mock tests contain 50 knowledge questions, with a target of at least 40 correct to match Wisconsin's 80% passing requirement. Wisconsin also has a separate 15-question highway-signs test, which requires at least 12 correct answers. All tests use the same question database, where the questions are selected at random from these categories:
